Governance

ELLIS Alicante is a private foundation established in 2020 with foundational capital from 40 members of Spanish civil society, reflecting broad community support and diverse perspectives.

Exemplary governance

ELLIS Alicante’s governance structure ensures accountability and excellence:

  • Independent Board of Trustees overseeing strategic direction and financial stewardship
  • Scientific Advisory Board of international experts guiding research priorities
  • Rigorous ethical review of all research involving human participants
  • Conflicts of interest policies ensuring integrity in all partnerships and publications
  • Externally audited accounts independently reviewed by external auditors and publicly available on our website

Our governance model embodies the principles of transparency, independence, and scientific excellence that define research institutions in the 21st century.

Governance structure

The board is responsible for the governance and representation of the Foundation, the fulfilment of its goals and the administration and management of its assets. Board members are selected for their technical knowledge and professional experience. The board does not include founders or representatives of funding organizations, ensuring independence.

In addition, ELLIS Alicante has a Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and a Trustees Committee (TC).

The Scientific Advisory Board is composed of internationally recognized scientists in the areas of research of ELLIS Alicante. Their role is to support the research agenda of ELLIS Alicante and provide their expert feedback. Typically, the SAB meets once a year.

The Trustees Committee is composed of highly relevant individuals from an institutional, political, professional, business or social perspective. They act as ambassadors to ELLIS Alicante with a particular focus on helping the Foundation identify new funding and collaboration opportunities.

Finally, the board may appoint a director of the Foundation, with executive functions. The director will be responsible for the implementation of the Foundation’s vision and mission. Depending on the profile, the director might also be in charge of the scientific leadership of the Foundation or a Scientific Director might be appointed by the board.
